For about every 50 female participants, there is one male participant at the Interlake invitational. This goes for just about every invitational as well. To put it in WikiAnswers terms, the ratio of female dancers to male dancers is: a lot to a lil. Considering this ratio, I can't help but to get excited whenever I see a team with male dancers, even if it's just one...the one I will essentially be devoting my full attention to. So when a small team of 3-4 took the floor, all females and one male, it was no question that I suddenly got interested during this tedious 40-team competition. As a slow ballad came on, they showcased a gracefully composed choreography that assessed their unlimited flexibility. I began to feel a little pathetic knowing that the guy was more flexible than me, maybe even when I was in my prime, so I totally respected him. Of course, testosterone got the best of some spectators sitting next to me and the nature of this informational social influence triggered them perceive this male dancer as 'gay' and continued to belittle this person. Gay or not, nothing irks me more than instigating the perceived 'rule book' of gender and social conformity. I, for one, will refuse to be morally diminished in a crowd.
